The Department of Fire & EMS is currently seeking candidates for the position of Lieutenant (Station Officer & Shift Officer). The successful candidate will be promoted to the level of Lieutenant and assigned to the current vacancy as a 24-hour operational position as a Station Officer.

Botetourt County Employment Application

Code Enforcement Officer

Botetourt County (pronounced Bot-ah-tot), is one of Virginia’s most scenic and historically significant County. Botetourt County is recruiting for the position of Code Enforcement Officer to join our Department of Community Development.  This is a newly created, full-time position with an excellent benefits package, including state retirement.

Recently, Botetourt has been involved in a host of projects and exciting announcements which are furthering the Botetourt 2040 vision to “Honor our History, Enjoy the Present and Shape the Future.”  The reconstruction of Interstate 81’s Exit 150 Access Management Project and the announced locations of a new auto parts manufacturing facility, a major craft brewery, and the Virginia Community College Shared Services Center all continue to facilitate the need for managing day-to-day zoning activities as well as sound comprehensive and long-range planning.

The selected candidate will have responsibility for performing varied professional assignments in the field of zoning and code enforcement.  Success in this position requires the ability to effectively interact with a diverse community, apply complex code requirements to varied situations, navigate conflict and seeks positive solutions. An ideal candidate would be articulate, resourceful, patient and detail oriented.

This position requires experience with:

Thorough Knowledge of:

-Reading and interpretation of site plans, conceptual plans, conceptual plans, and subdivision plates

-Systematically compiling and analyzing technical and diverse statistical information

-Provide technical assistance and information to the public in the administration of the zoning ordinance.

-Coordinate efforts with other departments and agencies

-Investigate violations of zoning regulations and ordinances, including site visits

-Develop and maintain automated tracking systems, hard copy files, and records

-Provide assistance to the County Attorney related to the prosecution of code enforcement cases

-Attend Board of Zoning Appeals, County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors meetings

Education and Experience:

-High School graduate and two (2) years experience in planning, zoning, code enforcement, land use regulations, including considerable public contact, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform job duties.

Preferred:

-VAZO CZO or equivalent certification

-Knowledge of relevant local and state codes and legal processes

-Knowledge of the principals and practices of professional planning and zoning

-Effective ordinance interpretation and implementation

-Considerable knowledge of requirements for land use development, engineering practices, and applicable procedures

-Previous experience in law enforcement and/or the enforcement of state, local or federal codes, and regulations would be beneficial

Training Captain – Fire & Emergency Medical Services

Botetourt County is seeking an experienced Training Captain for our Fire & EMS Department to join our team. This position functions as the primary training official for the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services. The Training Captain is responsible for the coordination and, as required, delivery of training programs impacting volunteer and career Fire/EMS staff and the public. This position will require both field and office duties requiring emergency medical and firefighting skills and assists with development and implementation of visionary direction for Botetourt County Fire and EMS.

The Training Captain is also responsible for maintaining various training records, associated files, training aids and equipment. Employee may be subject to the usual hazards of emergency response work. Performs related work as directed. Functions under the general direction of the Chief of Fire and EMS.

Education and Experience:

Required:

-High school diploma or GED

-Virginia EMT Basic

-Virginia Office of EMS Education Coordinator or Virginia Department of Fire Programs Instructor II

Preferred:

-Associates Degree or higher

-Paramedic certification preferred

-Instructor III preferred

-If Fire Instructor, Virginia Department of Fire Programs Adjunct status

-Some college level classes in fire administration, organizational leadership, adult learning, EMS, or related field preferred with an Associates Degree or higher

Site Supervisors – Recreation and Facilities

Botetourt County is accepting applications to fill multiple seasonal site supervisor worker positions in the Recreation and Facilities Department.  Preferred qualifications include a general knowledge of Basketball and Basketball record keeping.  Applicant should be a quick learner and must be willing to diffuse problems that take place at sporting events.  Examples of work will include, opening and closing facilities, set up equipment and player benches as needed, sweep gym floors, clean utilities as needed and supervise spectators.  This position will work varying hours as needed, such as Saturdays 8am to 3pm, Sundays 12:30pm to 6:30pm and possibly some weekday evenings after 6pm.  Applicant must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license and a good driving record.  Subject to a criminal background check and recommended to obtain a CPR certification.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Manager

Botetourt County is seeking an experienced and versatile Geographic Information Systems Manager to join our team. The GIS manager will work closely with the County administration, geospatial related decision makers in various departments, and Technology Services staff to identify, recommend, develop, implement and support effective solutions, processes and services relevant to GIS.

The GIS Manager performs complex advanced professional and administrative work planning, coordinating, managing, and, as necessary, executing the design, development and implementation of the County’s enterprise GIS and related services, systems, projects and policies.  Responsibilities include oversight and coordination of GIS efforts within County agencies, coordination and provision of GIS user support and training, management of County GIS data assets and personnel, and development of GIS work plans and long-term strategy. The individual will interact with stakeholders at all levels, internally and externally, on matters related to geographic information systems, services, projects and initiatives. Performs other duties as required.

Education and Experience:

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Information Technology, Planning, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred: GIS professional (GISP) certification

Required:

  • Proven experience in enterprise GIS operational development, project management, policy development and strategic planning
  • Experience with enterprise-level Geo-Spatial databases
  • Experience with the ESRI product line, particularly ArcSDE

Preferred:

  • Five years of progressively responsible management experience in GIS
  • Extensive experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment

Botetourt County is recruiting for the position of Agricultural Development Officer (ADO) to join our Department of Economic Development and to assist in the development of programs. The position’s activities will lead to robust agricultural development in the County with emphasis placed upon programs to assist various opportunities for new or expansion of agricultural sectors and will advise on agribusiness issues and activities, promoting new and expanded local agribusiness opportunities. The ADO will serve as liaison between County Administration, various boards, commissions and committees relating to agricultural activities.

This is a full-time position with an excellent benefits package, including state retirement through Virginia Retirement System.

The selected candidate will have responsibility for performing varied professional assignments in the field of agriculture.

Areas of Responsibility:
• Develop, present, maintain and periodically update the agriculture development plan
• Assess economic trends in the agricultural sector; to assist in cultivating an environment conducive for agricultural enterprises
• Research and develop programs for crops and livestock for new opportunities and production methods to enhance various agricultural sectors

Recreation

The Department of Parks and Recreation is continually looking for dedicated volunteers to support its various programs and activities. The County utilizes volunteers to support parks and playing fields, coach youth sports teams, and promote its many programs. Additionally, the County works collectively with seven booster clubs in the area made up entirely of volunteers, which support and organize local youth sports leagues.
