Director of Recreation

Botetourt County is recruiting for the position of Director of Recreation.

This is a full-time position with an excellent benefits package, including state retirement.

The selected candidate will plan, review and direct the activities of the Recreation Department programs including recreation, outdoor programs, river activities, biking, hiking, sports, special events and senior activities. The position is responsible for, directs, oversees and assists in the planning, development, operation and review of recreational facilities, sports complex operations and programs to provide and support diverse, quality recreational and leisure opportunities for all County residents and visitors consistent with community demands reflected in the County’s vision.

This position requires experience with:

· Monitoring and reporting to executive leadership industry trends and conditions, regulatory proposals and development, industry innovations and best practices

· Conception and development of strategies, goals, plans, programs and systems

· Development of outdoors programs as demanded by the public and use of natural resources

Thorough Knowledge of:

· The principles and practices of supervision, staff selection, motivation, training and personnel management

· The recreational, cultural and social needs of all age groups and people of diverse backgrounds

· Effective intra-department, inter-department, inter-agency, public and community engagement and relationship skills

· Demonstrated efficiency in planning, management and financial management

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in recreation administration, physical education, leisure services or related field; at least five years of experience as a top or assistant leader of a full-service recreation organization serving people of all ages; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

· VRPS or NRPA certified, preferred

Position Range: $78,750 – $118,125; Starting salary based on qualifications.

Recreation Manager

Botetourt County is recruiting for the position of Recreation Manager to join our Department of Recreation and Facilities. This is a full-time position with an excellent benefits package, including state retirement.

The Recreation Manager performs administrative, supervisory, and physical duties to plan, organize, and carry out recreational programs, activities, and special events for youth, adults and seniors. The position is resonsible for promotion and oversight of the BOCO Transit program. Success in this position requires the ability to develop and implement programs to meet the recreation needs of the County.

This position requires experience with:

· Coordinating, developing, evaluating, implementing, and promoting recreational programs and activities

· Supervising program and facility staff members

· Promoting and facilitating active lifestyles through public recreation activities, events, and programming

Education and Experience:

· Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in leisure services, parks and recreation administration, physical education, or related fields

· Minimum of five years’ experience working in the field of recreation that includes adult and youth athletic leagues, senior activities, and special events

· Minimum of three years management and supervisory experience including budget, personnel, and program management

Maintenance and Recreation Secretary

Botetourt County has an immediate opening for the position of Maintenance and Recreation Secretary.

This is a Full-Time position with excellent benefits and retirement.

Job Summary:

The Maintenance and Recreation Secretary performs a variety of administrative, clerical and general office tasks for Botetourt County’s Maintenance and Recreation Departments. This position is full-time at approximately 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:30am – 5:00pm. Occasional work outside of this schedule may be required.

Essential Functions:

· Responsible for answering the telephone; typing; scheduling appointments; processing mail; greeting visitors; maintaining computer files; preparing and organizing correspondence, messages handouts and forms; and ordering supplies.

· Responsible for overseeing the general care, maintenance and operation of office machines and equipment.

· Disseminates Recreation Department information to the public and responds to inquiries.

· Responsible for adminstration of facilities maintenance software ticket requests for service.

· Responsible for processing Maintenance and Recreation departmental bills and invoices.

· Coordinates with National Alliance for Youth Sports regarding coaches, officials and parents’ matters, including organization and submittal of NAYS-related fees.

· Responsible for receiving and processing recreation-related activity fees and submitting them to the County Treasurer’s Office.

Job Requirement:

· High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Supplemental college course work related to position preferred.

· Considerable experience in secretarial or administrative work with a minimum of 2 years.

· Must have effective oral and written communication skills for positively interacting with the public and county staff.

Position Salary Range: $26,620.00 – $39,930.00; DOQ

Combination Building Inspector I

Botetourt County is accepting applications for the position of Combination Building Inspector I, in the Department of Community Development.

This position will conduct work activities in an office setting but mostly requires working in outside environmental conditions with exposure to residential construction jobsite hazards.

Starting salary for the position is based on experience and qualifications. Included with the compensation is an excellent benefits package including state retirement benefits through the Virginia Retirement System.

Preferred qualifica­tions in­clude:  

  • (3) years’ experience in general building construction, materials, practices and methods of design, or any combination of education and experience equivalent to may be considered
  • Thorough knowledge of County and related codes and ordinances pertaining to building construction, alteration and repair
  • Ability to detect structural and other faults, recommend correction and document detailed and accurate records
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints accurately to compare with construction progress

 Examples of this work include:

  • Ensures compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and the County Code for residential building construction, alterations, repairs, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems
  • Exercises technical judgement in enforcing applicable codes and regulations
  • Reviews plans to ensure conformity to building codes and zoning ordinance

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • (4) Residential Inspection Certifications or have the ability to obtain (1) certification within (18) months of hire and the remaining certifications within (36) months of hire
  • Certification as a residential Building Plans Examiner or have the ability to obtain the certification within (36) months of hire
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License and a good driving record; both must be maintained throughout employment
  • General knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, gas or electrical systems

Botetourt County has an immediate opening for a part-time of GIS Specialist in our Technology Services Department.  This position offers a flexible work schedule, with hours being worked Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and will average 24 per week; holiday pay, sick leave, and accrued vacation leave included.

This position requires:

  • Associate degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Geography, GIS or related field and a minimum of 2 years of current experience using ArcGIS software (ESRI Platform) — or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Intermediate to Advanced skills in ESRI GIS platform with high emphasis in creating content within ArcGIS Online
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations such as file transfer, file manipulation; participate in upgrades and patch management as it pertains to GIS operations
  • Ability to stay abreast of current and emerging GIS technologies and industry practices and provide future direction for GIS operations
  • Experience with data analysis in GIS environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to train new users on ArcGIS Online and assist with ArcGIS mapping software issues
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office 365 Suite
  • Ability to multitask, excellent attention to detail, manage time, records and resources wisely, and prioritize and perform work with minimal supervision

The Department of Parks and Recreation is continually looking for dedicated volunteers to support its various programs and activities. The County utilizes volunteers to support parks and playing fields, coach youth sports teams, and promote its many programs. Additionally, the County works collectively with seven booster clubs in the area made up entirely of volunteers, which support and organize local youth sports leagues.
